Katie Whitby had three hits and winning pitcher Hilary McNelis belted a double to drive in a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Tyrone defeated Southern Huntingdon 6-5, in softball on Thursday.
The Lady Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season.
Tyrone scored in only two innings, but put up a three-spot in each of the second and seventh innings and that was enough for the victory.
McNelis fanned a pair and walked three in picking up the win, in addition to her big game-winning two-bagger in the Lady Eagles final at bat.
Brittany Wilson, Loriel Herist and Katie Whitby also drove in one run each for Tyrone, who trailed 5-4 going into the seventh inning.
“We are learning to compete for seven innings,” explained Tyrone coach Lois Loncher, “ and we are making the plays in crunch time. Loriel Herist saved a home run in the left-center field gap. Missy Stager threw a runner out at home from right field. We finally got some hits with runners in scoring position. Brittany Wilson hit a triple with two out to score a run. Hilary had the game-winning hit in the seventh inning with two outs to score two runs to win the ballgame.”
Brittany Yoder led Southern Huntingdon with two hits, including a triple. Yoder took the tough-luck loss, striking out two and walking one.
