The Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil basketball team celebrated senior night in style on Friday night. A pre-game ceremony honoring players Emily Worthing and Ashley Smith along with statistician Rebecca Nau was followed by a sound thumping of the Glendale Lady Vikings. The Lady Devils put three players in double figures on their way to a 65-34 win.
“Before the game we talked about giving the seniors something they could always remember,” said head coach Nick Lovrich, “and I think we did that.”
Taking their home court for the final time, seniors Emily Worthing and Ashley Smith made the most of the opportunity.
Worthing scored a career-high 13 points, three of which came on a buzzer-beater at the end of the first half from almost 10 feet behind the three-point line.
Smith ran the Lady Devil offense to perfection against Glendale’s full-court pressing defense. She also recorded 4 points and 3 assists to go with 3 blocks.
“Our seniors really played well tonight,” said Lovrich. “Emily had a career-high in points and Ashley did a great job running the point and playing defense.”
Not to be forgotten, junior Katie Gardner and sophomore Steph Hatch reminded the Bellwood faithful what they have to look forward to next season. Gardner scored a game-high 22 points, pulled 8 rebounds, and blocked 7 shots. Hatch scored 16 points and blocked 8 shots.
“It was just a great all-around game,” added Lovrich. “Whenever you can play a game like that right before the playoffs it definitely gives you a boost heading in.”
Glendale was led by Ashley O’Shell who scored 18 points. The Lady Vikings also received 4 point each from Kaytee Gates, Sara McGarvey, and Michelle Peoples.
The win moves the Lady Devils to 14-8 on the season and 6-2 in the second cycle of the Juniata Valley League. The B-A girls will head to Juniata Valley on Monday for a contest with the Lady Hornets. Tip-off time is 7:30.
Junior Varsity
Allison Sinisi scored a game-high 12 points to lead the Lady Blue Devils in a 40-20 win over Glendale. The Lady Devils also received eight points from Jamie Smith and seven from Lauren Carter.
