District playoffs begin tonight for local area girls volleyball teams.
In Class AA, Tyrone will host sixth seed Mount Union in the Tyrone Elementary gym at 7 p.m. Tenth seed Bellwood-Antis travels to Amesville to battle Moshannon Valley at 7 p.m.
“This is a chance for redemption for us,” said Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg, whose Lady Eagles (14-4) lost only four matches during the regular. However, two of those four defeated came at the hands of Mount Union. “We feel we didn’t play up to our level of competition in either of our matches with Mount Union. The girls are excited-they are looking at it as another chance to turn the tables on Mount Union. We are two evenly-matched teams. Nearly every game between the two of us was decided by two points or so. We had a good practice last night and we can go 100% and hope those two points will fall our way this time.”
Bellwood-Antis finished the regular season 8-10.
“We are just looking to end the season on a positive note, said Bellwood-Antis coach Jennel Miller. “We want our seniors to go out with a good feeling and we want our underclassmen to get some experience playing at a higher level to help prepare for next year. Hopefully all the stuff we worked on during the year can come together. Beating Moshannon Valley would be a great step in the right direction. We just need to take it one step at a time.”
The winner of the BA/Mo Valley game will face No. Two seed Bishop Guilfoyle, who drew a bye through the first round, on Thursday.
