The Tyrone Girls Volleyball hosted Mount Union on Wednesday night in the final match of the 2002 season at the Tyrone Area Elementary gym.
Seven senior girls were honored before the varsity match for the service and dedication they have put into the young program in just it’s third year at Tyrone Area High School. Kristen Schleiden, Mindy Rudy, Brittany Wilson, Lindsey Bailey, Lauren Haag, Amber DelBaggio and Joanna Turner played their last home match for Tyrone.
The Mount Union Trojans played tough in defeating the Lady Eagles two games to one to claim the match.
Mouint Union edged Tyrone in both of the end games 16-14 in the first and 15-13 in the thirtd game, while Tyrone went on a tear to knock off the Lady Trojans 15-6 in the middle game.
“They were able to make the plays at the key points of the match and we weren’t,” reported Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “It basically came down to 3 or 4 points that determined who was going to come out on top. We just didn’t play aggressively enough to get the job done. I don’t think they had an answer to Jo Turner; she played her best match of the year, but we weren’t able to get her the ball enough.”
Junior Jeri Harper led the Lady Eagles who finish the season 14-4, with 13 service points. Joanna Turner had five kills and Amber DelBaggio handed out 17 assists.
Jaime Endres led Mount Union with 10 service points.
Mount Union also won the junior varsity match, winning two straight games 15-11, 15-2.
Jessica Ott led the Tyrone girls junior varsity squad with four service points.
