The Tyrone cross country teams traveled to Bellefonte on Tuesday to run against the Red Raiders.
Bellefonte defeated the Golden Eagle boys 23-32 and the Tyrone girls were just edged by the Lady Red Raiders 26-29.
Tyrone runner Jim Gehret had the best time of the afternoon, finishing first in 20:24, a comfortable full minute in front of his nearest competition. Bellefonte runners took the next three places and five of the top eight for their victory. Stephen Bailey led Red Raider runners with a second place finish in 21:26.
Nick Barndt broke up the Bellefonte streak with fifth place finish in 21:56 in a group of four, all who finished within 11 seconds of each other. Dane McCloskey finished seventh, Eric Sweet ninth and Brian Pearson 10th for the Eagles.
“Jimmy Gehret ran an awesome race,” explained Tyrone coach Tammy Snyder. “He went out with a bang at the beginning and never slowed down. Nick Barndt and Dane McCloskey also ran very good races. Nick had to battle at the finish, but he had a great kick and kept the guy behind him at the finish.”
Rebecca Mogle had the top Lady Eagles finish with a third place time of 25:08, followed by teammates Emily Ingle (fourth), Angel Diehl (sixth), Erin Langenbacher (seventh) and Adeena Harbst (ninth).
“Our girls once again had a very close race. If we keep improving as much as we have, I think we can get these teams at the conference meet. This has just been a season of injury and illness for the girls team, hopefully we are coming out of that. Rebecca, Emily and Angel are coming along. They all ran good races today finishing close, as did Erin and Adeena.”
