On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Tyrone girls volleyball team traveled to Bald Eagle High School to take part in the fourth annual “Bald Eagle Spiketacular” Volleyball Tournament.
In just their third year of existence, the Tyrone Lady Eagles served and spiked and passed their way to the championship round. There, the young ladies from Tyrone, defeated Central Mountain in the championship match in two straight games, 16-14, 15-10 to claim the title and trophy that accompanies it.
Statistics for an entire tournament are a bit different from reporting one match at a time.
Amber DelBaggio had 53 assists, Lauren Haag had 26 kills, Joanna Turner had 10 blocks and Stephanie Catich had 33 service points.
“I was very proud of the girls performance this weekend,” said Coach Dave Eckberg. “It was nice to see them rewarded for all the hard work they have put in. It was a long day of competition, but the girls stuck together and came out on top. Our passing and defense won the tournament for us, along with some heady play from Amber DelBaggio, whom we rely on to get us out of bad times. I don’t think she has been outplayed by any setter we have seen so far. Our outsides are taking more god swings, which we have worked on in practice. There are a lot of role players on this team. The girls have accepted it and I think we are a better overall team because of it.”
