The Tyrone golf team waded through the rains on Thursday at the Philipsburg Country Club against Philipsburg-Osceola and Mount Union. The rains dampened enthusiasm and golf course with everybody playing just nine holes, instead of the usual 18.
Tyrone, coached by Jim Gillam, put two more matches into the win column to up their 2002 record to 7-2 in the Central Pennsylvania High School Golf Association (CPHSGA) and 7-3 overall.
Medalist for the rainy day was Tyrone junior Thad Westley with a 35, followed closely by teammate Jimmy Gillam with a 37. Derrick Soellner added a 40 to give the Golden Eagles the three lowest scores of the day. Mount Union’s low man was Greg Beeler with a 41, Philipsburg-Osceola was led by Sam Blake’s 42. Tyrone senior Matt Germino and Mount Union’s Jarod Sroica carded 43’s.
Tyrone defeated Mount Union 155-177 and Philipsburg-Osceola 155-185.
Brandon Hribik also shot a 43 for the Eagles.
The next competition for the Tyrone golfers will be Monday Sept. 30, at the CPHSGA Coaches Invitational at Mount Union, beginning at 10 a.m.
