The Tyrone girls volleyball team ran into a very tough and seasoned Bishop Guilfoyle squad on Monday afternoon at the Bishop Guilfoyle High School gym.
The Lady Marauders (6-0) reamained undefeated, while Tyrone (4-1) suffered their first setback of the season after opening the 2002 campaign four straight wins.
BG took the match in two straight games 15-2, 15-8 behing 10 service points by Shanon McGill and seven for Jenna Ciambotti.
Katie Whitby led the Lady Eagles with eight service points, including four aces.
“Bishop Guilfoyle is a strong team,” explained Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “They do just about everything well and they run some things on offense that we are not use to seeing that much in our league. We didn’t pass the ball very well last night and when you play a solid team like BG, the little mistakes you make are magnified. We didn’t generate any offense to put pressure on them and that has been our problem so far throughout the season. We can control the ball, but we need to increase our hitting percentage. We are still playing too conservatively and we are making too many hitting errors. We need to refocus and play a strong game against Williamsburg on Wednesday.”
The Tyrone junior varsity girls lost to the Bishop Guilfoyle Jayvees in two games also, falling 5-15 and 14-16, in a nailbiter as the Lady Eagles nearly forced the Marauder jayvees to a third and deciding game.
Stephanie Catich and Katie Whitby had two aces each and Lindsey Bailey had two kills
