The Tyrone junior high school football team opened defense of their Big Eight title against Indian Valley at Tyrone.
The Little Eagles scored early to take a 6-0 lead that carried through the entire first half, then added two second-half tallies and took advantage of a tough defensive effort for a 20-0 victory.
Leonard Wilson connected with Trey Brockett for a 39-yard scoring pass in the opening quarter for the early lead.
In the third quarter, Wilson ran in a six-yard touchdown and Brockett added the 2-pt. PAT rush to put the Eagles up 14-0. Then in the fourth quarter, Heath Walk scored on a five-yard run. The extra point attempt was blocked.
Wilson ran three times for 106 yards and completed two passes for 53 yards, a touchdown and was intercepted twice. Walk added four carries for 15 yards, Tyler Gillman had six carries for 19 yards and Thad Graham added two carries for seven yards.
The defensive effort for Tyrone was fueled by five quarterback sacks with Bill Ramsey leading the way with two and Bill Smith, Leonard Wilson and Adam Shaffer recording one each. Dustin Brown had an interception and Wilson, Ramsey and Tyler Hoover each recovered an Indian Valley fumble.
“Overall it was a very good effort,” said Tyrone coach Dan Plummer. “We were real pleased with what we saw on both sides of the ball. The defense was exceptionally tough. We still have some things we need to work on, but we were pleased with what we saw for the first time out. I am looking forward to our game next Thursday at Bellefonte.”
The eighth-grade team also came away with a win over Indian Valley on Thursday with Shane Tate scoring the only TD of the contest on a seven-yard run in a 7-0 Tyrone win.
“I was very pleased with our effort,” said coach Luke Rhoades. “Everyone gave 110%.”
