The Tyrone Area High School softball team opened the home portion of their 2008 season at the diamond on the hill at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex, on Thursday.
Although the final score of Penns Valley, 19-3 doesn’t sound like it was much of a ballgame, the final tally was not indicative of the game that was played on the field. The Tyrone girls gave Penns Valley all they could handle until the Lady Rams struck for a big inning that changed the tempo of the game.
After being no-hit by Bald Eagle Area in their season opener at Wingate, the Lady Eagles took no longer than their second at-bat to erase that possibility.
Penns Valley wasted no time in putting a trio of runs on the scoreboard to open the game in the top of the first, but Tyrone came right back in the bottom of the second to bunch a combination of hits and walks to score three times and erase the Lady Rams lead and tie the game at 3-3. Tianna Kobuck had a clutch two-run single that she lined up the middle and Tyrone pitcher Ariane Miller got the third RBI.
“I was glad to see us put the bats on the ball and tie the score up after two innings. It looked like we were going to make a game of it but didn’t,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “They put the ball in play in the third and we made errors. The cold and drizzle made things get ugly at the end.”
That three-run inning for the Lady Eagles knocked the starting pitcher from the mound, but Penns Valley starting center fielder Rachel Myers, came on in relief and shut the Lady Eagles down for the rest of the contest. Myers was also the hitting star for Penns Valley with a double, triple and six RBI, as the Lady Rams, came right back after Tyrone tied the game, with a dozen big runs in the top of the third midst the damp and drizzle that became more evident as the game went on.
