This July will be an artistic month for the library as we present our first-ever Summer Art Camp and a new artist of the month in our gallery. From July 21 through July 25, the library will be hosting Express Yourself, a weeklong daily program introducing children ages 8-12 to the fine arts held in the Community Room from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
The five sessions will feature theater, painting, poetry, sculpture, and dance. The program emphasizes learning through fun and participation. Children who attend will be encouraged to do the activities with minimal instruction, producing unique, personal works of art.
Space is limited, so register as soon as possible! You can register in person at the library or at 684-1133.
This summer the library is also hosting scrapbooking clubs for children and teens in two groups. The grades 4 and 5 group meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 4:30-8 p.m. and the grades 6 to 9 group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at the same time.
Attendees can come and go at their convenience, so don’t let a baseball game or dance lessons stop you from signing up. The library provides refreshments and scrapbooking equipment–attendees are responsible for providing their own paper, photos, glue, scissors, stickers, and scrapbook.

The library will be exhibiting works by local artist Marilyn Mitchell Shaw through July.
Ms. Shaw studied art formally throughout her childhood but went a self-described “36 year hiatus” while marrying and raising three sons.
In the late 80s she attended the Juniata College and earned a B.A. in fine arts and photography at the age of 55. She now owns and operates the Marilyn Shaw Studios and is actively involved in numerous local art classes and programs.
Ms. Shaw’s work has also been shown at the Juniata College Museum of Art, the Washington Street Gallery, JC Blair Hospital, the Huntingdon County Arts Council Spring Thaw Exhibit, the Huntingdon County Fair, and the Sinking Valley Farm Show.
She has also taught classes on drawing and painting and served on the Board of Directors of the Centre County Arts Council and Huntingdon County Arts Council.
Starting in July all video and DVD rentals at the library will be free of charge. Video game rentals will still require a two dollar deposit. We are currently trying to improve our audiovisual collection, so donations of DVDs, Audiobooks on CD, and video or computer games are appreciated. We are also taking donations for our next used book sale, which is tentatively scheduled for sometime in August. Stayed tuned to this column for further details–our next used book sale looks like it might be the biggest sale ever!
Families participating in the Summer Reading Program should be aware of a change in the schedule of events this month. The Bug Hunt and Eat an Edible Bug program originally scheduled for July 10 has been moved to July 31. The program on July 10 is now a Music, Magic and Puppet Show featuring Gene Alan.
Each of the programs start at 6:30 p.m. and are held in the library–we hope to see you at both!
