Claysburg-Kimmel dominated both the varsity and junior high wrestling matches against Bellwood-Antis on Tuesday evening. First the Little Bulldogs won all but two of the matches actually wrestled to top the Bellwood-Antis junior high 60-36, then the Claysburg-Kimmel varsity handed the Bellwood-Antis varsity a 52-30 loss.
In the varsity match, Claysburg ran off three straight pins to begin the dual to jump out to an 18-0 lead, only to have the Blue Devils use a forfeit and two pins of their own to tie the team score 18-18.
Claysburg forfeited to B-A 145-pounder Ricky Shawley (20-1). Ronnie Wilson (11-6) pinned Tyler Claar in 1:00, after opening a 5-0 lead at 152, and Garett Wyland (6-10) pinned Hassan Farag from the top with a 0-0 score, at 160.
Claysburg-Kimmel jumped back into the lead with two falls and a major decision in the next three weight classes, before Bellwood-Antis won at the bottom and then at the top as the Teams turned the lineup after beginning at 130. The heaviest Blue Devils, sophomore Cody Smith (3-2) took Shane Sell down and worked for the quick fall in 1:07 at 285. Then Troy Weyant (13-8) decked Michael McCreary at 103, in 3:31 to slice the Claysburg advantage to 34-30. Weyant had a takedown and three-point nearfall in the first period to take the early lead
That would be all for Bellwood-Antis however. Claysburg-Kimmel avenged a Blue Devil win last year that was the first B-A victory in the series in nine years by winning all of the final three weight classes with six-point team wins.
Timmy Collier (4-12) and Matt Aungst rolled each other around for a couple of reversals each, before Aungst put Collier on his back for the fall at 130 to begin the dual. Jesse Ritchey countered a takedown by B-A sophomore Cody Fink (5-14) with a reversal and pin in 0:34 at 135, and Daniel Knott repeated a pin from the Zeigler Tournament over Dustin Pruznak (3-9) in 0:50, at 140 to move Claysburg-Kimmel out to the 18-0 lead. In the tournament, Knott pinned Pruznak in am almost identical 0:58.
After the Blue Devils tied the match, Claysburg-Kimmel got a fall by Mike Snyder over Troy Byers (3-15) in 3:52 at 171, Ben Parry over Jimmy Watters (8-11) in 1:04 at 189, Seth Garber over Donnie Partner (3-14) in 4:51 at 119, and by Cody Feathers over Shane Noye (7-10) in 1:14 at 125 to close out the dual. Partner gave up the first points on a takedown by Garber, but took a 3-2 lead with a reversal and escape, before Garber recorded a takedown and took Partner to his back for the third-period fall.
At 215, Brandon Lackey majored Caleb Stevens (3-11) by a 12-3 score. Stevens led 3-2 early in the second period with an escape and reversal, but Lackey reversed and put Stevens on his back later in the same period and added another reversal and nearfall in the third stanza.
“Some of the kids have been doing a real good job,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “They’ve all been working hard. Tonight, I think, it was a little bit of lack of intensity that came back and bit us. Hopefully tomorrow night when we come back out, we have a little more intensity and fire in our bellies and go out and go after Northern Bedford. We could have won some of these matches against Claysburg tonight that we ended up losing or getting pinned. It’s painful in a match that should have been close and then end up giving up bonus points. Hopefully we can turn some of that around tomorrow.”
The Blue Devils host Northern Bedford tonight, in a makeup of a match scheduled the first week of the season in the B-A Middle School gym.
The only winners on the mat in the junior high dual for Bellwood-Antis were Gerald Price (210) and Travis Lyons (250), who both recorded pins. Tyler Beech (138), Travis Taylor (145), Nic Cover (155) and Trey Campbell (165) all won by forfeit.
