With the memory of getting run over by an extremely tough Bedford Bison squad fresh in their minds, the Bellwood-Antis track and field teams took dead aim on Everett Thursday in the opening home dual of the season. What resulted was not pretty as both the Bellwood-Antis boys and the lady Blue Devils took no prisoners in banishing Everett.
Brandon Pruznak won three events (200 and 400 dashes and high jump) and lost a bid for a fourth triumph when fellow three-event winner Brandon Humphreys (100 dash and long and triple jumps) outdueled him in the long jump with the B-A boys smashing Everett 127-23.
Blue Devil senior Tony DelGrosso won the shot put and discus and Adam Mueller won both the 110 high hurdles and 300 IM hurdles for Bellwood-Antis, which improves to 1-1.
Bellwood-Antis had an athlete place first in 16 of the 18 events, including all three relays. Dustin Harris, Jon Davila, Drew Saylor and Humphreys won the 400 relay, Evan Celmo, Troy Brunner, Josh Ervine and Mueller won the 1600 relay and Dustin Pruznak, Celmo, Jeremy Tomchick won the 3200 relay.
Jamie Rimmey added a first in the 3200, Harris won the javelin and Ricky Shawley won the pole vault.
In the 400 run, both hurdles, the long jump shot out, discus, javelin and pole vault, the Blue Devils took all three places.
“It was a pretty dominating performance,” said Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “Our depth really pulled us through. We have the benefit of a lot of competition among our kids for the spots in meets and that helps the kids to step up and score a lot of those second and third place points that you need to be successful. Plus we have some outstanding efforts by the top kids. Brandon Pruznak, Brandon Humphreys, Tony DelGrosso and Adam Mueller just keep working hard, starting with preseason conditioning. In track, you are not just running against the competition, you are competing against yourself, constantly trying to better your times and heights and distances.”
The Lady Blue Devils rebounded from the Bedford meet to trounce the Everett girls 110-39 to even their record at 1-1.
Lauren Leap recorded first place finishes in the long jump and high jump in addition to running a leg on the winning 400 and 1600 relays for B-A. Sarah Bell won both the 1600 and 3200 runs and the Lady Blue Devils took all three places in the 100 and 200 dashes, both hurdles and the high jump and both places in the pole vault.
Jannelle Wilt won the 100 dash, Lauren Carter won the 200 and Chelsea Wilson won the 400. Ashley Mueller won the 100 IM hurdles with teammate Heather Greene in second and then the two Lady Blue Devils switched positions in the 300 low hurdles with Heather winning and Ashley second. Heather Novak won the triple jump and Rachel Bilka won the pole vault.
“It was nice to be able to come back and get a win and build a little confidence,” explained Lady Blue Devil track coach Julia Roseborough. “We had some real nice surprises by some of the younger girls who came through with points. We saw some big improvements in the javelin and our sprints and hurdles. Our older girls have been very reliable. Some of the girls are trying different events for the first time in competition, although they have done them in practice and did a good job.
“The Igloo Invitational on Saturday will give us a chance to find out how good we really are.”
