Bellwood-Antis ran into a buzzsaw at Bedford on Tuesday in the track and field opener.
The B-A boys were defeated 80-70 by the Bisons, who notched their 44th straight dual meet victory, while the Lady Blue Devils fell 84-66 to their female counterparts.
The Bedford boys were led by the Marshalls, John, Josh and Zack, who combined for four firsts and five second place finishes, and Josh Lightner who won both hurdle events. John Marshall won the 200 dash, long jump and triple jump.
Brandon Pruznak (400 dash and high jump) and Tony DelGrosso (shot put and discus) led Bellwood-Antis with a pair of wins each, and Ben Hatch (400), Dustin Harris (javelin) and Ricky Shawley (pole vault) each contributed one victory. The 400 relay team of Harris, Jon Davila, Drew Saylor and Brandon Humphreys was victorious as was the 1600 relay team composed of Troy Brunner, Josh Ervine, Hatch and Pruznak.
Adam Mueller copped a pair of second places in the 110 high hurdles and 330 intermediate hurdles, Hatch was second in the 400, DelGrosso second in the javelin and Todd Narehood was second in the shot.
“This was a tough first match with the long win streak Bedford has accomplished and, they have a lot of kids who are back from last year,” explained Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “We had some questions answered for us and we hope to have a better performance against Everett on Thursday.”
Chelsea Wilson was the only double winners for the Lady Blue Devils with victories in the 400 dash and high jump. Sarah Bell was first in the 3200 and second in the 1600. Ashley Mueller won the 100 intermediate hurdles and was second in the 300 low hurdles. Lauren Leap won the long jump and led off the winning 400 relay team of Leap, Lauren Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller. Jannell Wilt was second in the 100 and long jump. Stephanie Damiano was second in the shot put and discus. Carter was second in the 220, Kristyn Ginter was second in the javelin and Kelly McCracken was second in the pole vault.
“We knew it would be a tough match,” said Lady Blue Devils coach Julia Roseborough. “I though we did about as well as we could have expected. It was a good performance overall for our first meet. We were just nipped at the wire in the 1600 relay and that would have put us just two points down. The girls did a good job and we found several of our younger girls who are going to help us this year.
“This tough start, with Bedford and then Everett and Hollidaysburg, will only help us to compete when we start meeting teams in the league.”
