A slow beginning turned into a hasty end for the Lady Eagles’ Softball team in their Tuesday night shutout against defending State Champion Bald Eagle Area.
Starting quietly with no runs on either side in the first inning, BEA heated things up in the second, scoring two consecutive runs with a double by Lauryn Weaver and an RBI from Ashley McClain. From that point on, the game belonged to Bald Eagle who managed one run in the third to bring the score to three-zero.
Bald Eagle Area’s Michelle Noll, Brittany Kilmer and Lindsay Confer brought the score up to five-nothing at the top of the fourth, by the Lady Eagles remained optimistic. They managed a defensive turnaround at the top of the fifth, only allowing Bald Eagle two more runs by Confer and Courtney Garner for the end the game.
Freshman Teanna Kobuck managed Tyrone’s only hit of the game with a single in the bottom of the fifth while pitcher Stefani Bryan struck out only two BEA girls in the final inning to end the game with a final score of 7-0 in favor of Bald Eagle.
Tyrone head coach Lois Loncher commented on her thoughts entering yesterday’s competition.
“We knew we were facing a top-notch team. They only lost two outfielders [from last season] so they were prepared. I think they have a great shot at returning to states and winning.
“The good points of the game were that we played them well and that they had a lot of hits, but we’re just learning our positions and covering responsibilities. We were where we needed to be. What [the coaches] have been preaching is that, in good or bad situations, we’ve got to keep fighting.”
The Lady Eagles are set to take to the field once again on Thursday, when they travel to Mount Union. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
