After opening the season with some very stiff competition against a veteran Bedford team on Tuesday, Bellwood-Antis opened the MAC season at home on Thursday against Everett and Philipsburg-Osceola. The mild weather continued and the Blue Devil boys and girls got red hot, defeating both teams easily to improve their overall records to 2-1.
The B-A girls got double victories from Jenna Ralston (800 and 1600 runs), Steph Hatch ( high jump and triple jump) and Allison Sinisi (javelin and pole vault) to lead the Lady Blue Devils to wins over Philipsburg-Osceola 108-42 and Everett 120-29.
Sarah Bell won the 3200 run, Ashley Mueller took the 100 intermediate hurdles, Lauren Carter won the 300 IM hurdles, Lauren Leap won the long jump, and Lindsey Claar won the discuss.
Bellwood-Antis also swept all three relays with Hatch, Carter, Erica Greene and Mueller winning the 400 relay, Carter, Leap, Chelsea Wilson and Ralston winning the 1600 relay and Ralston, Arin Cherry, Brittany Webb and Bell winning the 3200 relay.
The Lady Blue Devils also swept the pole vault with Sinisi taking top honors followed by Whitney Edwards and April Ruehle, and got 1-2 performances in the 1600 run, long jump and javelin and first and thirds in the 800 run, 300 IM hurdles, high jump and discuss to dominate the meet.
“Our seniors came through for us today, said Bellwood-Antis girls coach Julie Roseborough. “There are just four seniors on this team. Allison Sinisi took two first, Lindsey Claar had a first and second, StephHatch won two events and Jenna Ralston also won two. We also have a pretty good class of juniors. Erica Greene and Lauren carter both came back from injuries and did a good job. It was good to get a couple of wins. This will help mentally to keep the kids on the track to success.”
The Bellwood-Antis boys took eight of a possible 12 places in the field events, with Tyler Narehood winning the shot put, Tony DelGrosso taking the discuss and Dustin Harris winning the javelin, on the way to victories over Philipsburg-Osceola 98-52 and Everett 131-17.
“When you have a lot of young kid s, which we do, you need for them to step up and take leadership roles,” explained Bellwood-Antis boys coach Nick Lovrich. “These kids are starting to shine. Many of then ran personal bests. Ben Hatch broke the school freshman record in the 800 with his 2:11.5 timing. We are improving. Our goal is to get a little better each meet.”
Harris doubled up by winning the 200 dash and also was joined on the victorious 400 relay team by Devon Clapper, Jonathon Davila and Brandon Eger. DelGrosso added seconds in the shot put and javelin. Ben Hatch won the 800 run and was on the 1600 and 3200 relay teams as the B-A boys swept all three relays. In other individual events, Bell won the 1600 run, Pruznak won the 400 and the long jump and Eric Chamberlin won the 110 high hurdles.
The 1600 team was composed of Dan Kovac, Chris Edmiston, Hatch and Pruznak, and the 3200 team consisted of Evan Hughes, Hatch, Edmiston and Aaron Bell. Kovac was second in the triple jump and third in both the 200 dash and long jump.
”Winning all three relays was big,” said Lovrich. “It puts a lot of points on our score and doesn’t add to the opponent. Plus, it shows that we have depth, we have four good kids in those events.”
