Indian Valley spoiled the Tyrone Golden Eagles wrestling debut on Wednesday night on the road.
The Warriors opened the match trading pins and major decisions with the match beginning at the 119 weight class.
Indian Valley took the match and ran away with it with three straight falls from that point, and although Tyrone finished with victories in five of the final seven weights, the Golden Eagles were never able to come back from the early pin-parade by Indian Valley, who won 40-35.
Shayne Tate made his first varsity match a win by outscoring Mike Armstrong 16-6 on three takedowns and eight back points at 125 to get the Eagles on the scoreboard at 125, and Dave Miller went straight to work to deck Jeff Metzgar in 0:43 at 135.
The Warriors owned the next three weight classes however and Tyrone just wasn’t able to climb back out of the hole after Chad Battista (140) pinned Jacob Smerekar, Garrett Dixon (145) pinned Justin Schopp and Jeremiah Will (152) pinned Matt Lauder to give Indian Valley a 28-10 advantage.
Brice Mertiff, who missed the first part of the 2003-04 season recovering from a football injury, made a quick start in 2004 by decking Nate Reese in 0:57 at 160. James Updike used a second-period escape and takedown for the difference in an 8-5 win over Matt Reed at 171. Heath Walk led 9-5 at the beginning of the third period, at 189, when he caught Skyler Romig for the fall at the 4:19 mark to draw Tyrone to within three points, 25-28.
Andrew Noerr pinned John Miller at 215, to push the Indian Valley lead back to 34-25, and a forfeit at 103 gave the Warriors six free points.
At 275, Terry Tate pounded on Nate Knepp for five takedowns and six back points, but couldn’t quite pin or tech fall the Warrior heavyweight. Tate was forced to settle for four team points in a 19-5 major decision that cut the team lead to 34-29.
T. J. Albright took it to Brandon Rauch in the final bout of the evening at 112, leading 9-1 before registering the pin at the 5:11 mark of the third period.
Indian Valley also won the junior high match 56-37.
With the match beginning at 122, JoPaul VanAllman (145), A. J. Schopp (85) and Josh Miller (110) won by fall, Shane Emigh (130) won by major decision, Jordan Berry (155) won a decision and Chase Weaver (75) and William Smith won by forfeit for the Little Eagles.
