Tyrone started the season with their first game on the road against the defending 2004 District 6 Champs, Lewistown Wednesday night. Lewistown (3-1) looked to put the ball in Matt Hilton’s hands and let him take over the game, but Tyrone (0-0) wasn’t going to let him get any easy looks at the basket Wednesday night.
Adam Corle sent Tyrone out of the gates early hitting his first two shots from behind the arc within the first minute of the game, giving Tyrone an early lead.
The lead then switched hands several times in the first half of play, pacing back and forth. Tyrone played great in their opener taking control on the offensive boards and denying Hilton in the first half holding him to 5 points. As the game progressed, a bit of sloppiness came into play, but the fight in Tyrone would never die, instead keeping the game close and knotting it up at 33 against the (3-1) Panthers by the end of the first half.
“We had a lot of positive things happen tonight,” coach Mike Harris said. “We played real hard and the guys worked real hard, but we made a lot of first game mistakes.”
The second half looked to favor Tyrone as they jumped on a 9-2 run behind Leonard Wilson’s seven straight points to start the third quarter, putting Lewistown into a panic down 42-35 in the first 2 minutes of the third quarter.
Hilton, however, wouldn’t allow his team to stay behind much longer as he connected on two of his three treys. After regrouping from a timeout, Lewistown took the lead on a steal making the score 43-42.
Tyrone answered back with 8 straight points moving it to 50-43 behind Chamberlain and Wilson once again, taking control for the most part.
Hilton and Tressler caught them sleeping and answered back with three treys in a row to put them back in front.
“We didn’t do a good enough job stopping Hilton,” coach Harris stated. “He scored 24 points, and on top of that, Chris Tressler had 21. That shouldn’t have happened. We definitely need to work on our defense.”
The two teams battled the rest of the fourth quarter as they pounded points into each other in a physical finish. Tyrone found themselves down 66-62 with 35 seconds left in the game, looking to answer back and send this game into an extra frame. Tad Chamberlain stepped up by grabbing an Adam Corle attempt and laying it back in, cutting the lead to two points. On the assuming play, Leonard Wilson stole the ball in the backcourt and took it in for the tying layup, but was fouled hard to the ground as the ball trickled out of the rim. Wilson hit one of two, making it a 67-66 ball game with just 17.7 seconds left in the game.
After two Hilton foul shots, Tyrone wanted to hold the ball for a last second shot to try and tie the ball game, but a turnover only prevented their chance as they threw the ball away before taking that last second shot.
“We did a real good job at taking the ball to the basket tonight,” coach Harris said. “At times we drove the ball great to the basket, but we just settled for jump shots instead. Our passing was not very good tonight, we had too many turnovers. We would work real hard on the defensive end, get the rebound, and come back up the floor and turn the ball over.”
Tyrone shooting an amazing 47 percent from the field and 13-19 from the foul line in their loss to Lewistown, but turned the ball over 16 times making it hard to stay up on the offensive push. Lewistown, however, shot an outstanding 60% from the field and 9-15 from the foul line, taking few shots, but converting when they needed a big shot from the outside.
Tyrone’s Leonard Wilson and Tad Chamberlain led the Golden Eagles in scoring as Wilson put up 22 and Chamberlain chipped in 16 in a strong opening night performance at Lewistown.
Hilton and Tressler led Lewistown as Hilton had 24 along with Tressler’s 22.
Tyrone Jayvee Take Control in Opener at Lewistown
Locked at halftime, Tyrone and Lewistown jayvee’s were underway for a breathtaking finish at Lewistown Wednesday night. The lead changed possession through most of the third quarter as Shane Barr and Adam Shaffer kept Tyrone ahead in the game hitting key shots when they were down. Tyrone’s Wade Branstetter scored six of his eight points in the third to extend their lead to 33-29 going to the fourth.
The Panthers couldn’t find a comeback behind Doebler’s 11 points in the end losing 45-39.
The Tyrone jayvee’s pick up their first win on the road at Lewistown Wednesday night improving their record to 1-0. Shane Barr and Adam Shaffer led Tyrone in scoring as Barr scored 10 and Shaffer tagged in nine.
