Tuesday night, Tyrone (4-4) ran into a rough 2-8 Huntingdon Bearcat squad, but played out an explosive game in the renovated gymnasium. I’m not sure if it was the smell of the new floor or just plain anger carried over from Tyrone’s last game, but they took control of the entire game and did not look back at all.
It started all the way back in the first quarter, as Leonard Wilson shined brightly, proving he practices his foul shooting. He shot eight free throws and sunk them all as Tyrone ripped a 10-0 run with 5:34 left in the first quarter. This game stayed in the Eagles possession as Huntingdon just couldn’t catch up.
At the end of a quarter, Tyrone lead 19-10, and would continue to pound the ball into the Bearcat defense.
Starting off the second quarter, Kevin Hersheberger hit one of two free throws to put Tyrone up 10, but Matt Young nailed a three to cut it to 7 points. This was as close as the game got as Tyrone bounced a 13-0 run with just 4:08 to go in the half going ahead 31-13 and frustrating this Bearcat squad.
“We really did a good job rebounding the ball,” coach Mike Harris said. “Having Kevin Hershberger back helped us out on the boards. Tad Chamberlain, Josh Crabtree and Jason Haney also did a great job pulling down rebounds in the game for us tonight. Everybody we put in the game tonight did a great job.”
As the game continued on, Tyrone pushed the ball on every missed shot of Huntingdon as they went “one and done” just about everytime down the floor. Wilson played a key role in the first half for Tyrone as he put up 12 of his season-high 23 points pulling Tyrone ahead 21 at halftime.
Most games consist of 30 foul shots combined from each side, but tonight Tyrone shot 21-30 from the charity stripe last night. Leonard Wilson, Josh Crabtree, Jason Haney and Tad Chamberlain took the ball strong every chance they had making Huntingdon foul almost everytime in the paint. Tyrone really worked on the inside points in the paint as they took few shots behind the arc and converted all of their points inside the three point line.
Tyrone had command of this game and just would not let another big lead slip away as they went into the locker room up 43-22 at the half. This was a disaster for Huntingdon as they looked for answers from their coaches and fans, but no one was their to help.
As the second half got underway, Chamberlain scored first putting the Eagles up 23, a minute into the third quarter. After a Huntingdon layup, Tyrone went on a 7-1 run with 3:36 remaining in the third putting a muzzle on this Bearcat squad.
As the game played out, Tyrone lead by 25 points after three quarters and never looked back winning a rivalry by 24 on the road, 65-41. Tyrone shot 25-39 from the free throw line in their win Tuesday night. They were 21-30 in the first half, and 5-9 in the second half improving slightly. This was a key to the game because they made almost half of their points from the foul line.
“We work real well on our foul shots three to four times a day,” Harris said. “Before school we’re in the gym two times a week on Monday and Wednesday shooting free throws. We really get guys in shape by shooting foul shots which tonight helped us out a lot.
Mike Harris quoted on Kevin Hersberger’s return: “He played really well tonight and I expected what I wanted to expect from him in this game. Kevin was out of sync a little bit because he hasn’t played many games, but tonight he did a really good job rebounding and running the floor.”
Tyrone is now 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference as they face off against Bishop Guilfoyle Saturday night. The Eagles have won four out of their last five games and their last three conference games since the Hollidaysburg tournament.
Leonard Wilson took control for Tyrone as he scored 23 points in their win on the road.
Huntingdon falls to 2-9 on the year as Zach Reed and Nick Kocik combined for 20 points in their loss at home.
Tyrone Jayvee fall to Huntingdon
Late in the fourth quarter, Tyrone was down seven with just two minutes left in regulation. With the lead the entire game, Huntingdon teased Tyrone by letting them score seven straight points to tie the game with 48 seconds to go. An exchange of scores tied the game again at 50 a piece, but Huntingdon hit a shot with 13 seconds to go to take the lead.
Tyrone took one last shot, but Steve Catich was denied as time expired giving
Tyrone Jayvee’s a 2-2 record on the season. Byron Kost lit up the Bearcat defense with 22 points of his own, but it wasn’t enough to capture a win at Huntingdon.
Jason Shoemaker led the Bearcats with 15 points in their win against Tyrone Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles travel to Altoona on Saturday to battle always tough Bishop Guilfoyle. Junior varsity action will start at 6 p.m. with varsity following at 7:30.
