The Bellwood-Antis boys cross country team lost their first race of the season on Tuesday at home.
Penns Valley swept both the boys and girls races, handing the Blue Devil boys a 21-40 defeat and knocking the Lady Blue Devils 2 1-37.
Will Edwards third place finish was the Blue Devils best effort in 18:08. Aaron Bell was fourth in 18:25 and Brandon Beech was 10th in 19:55.
Judson Brooker was first across the finish line in 17:19 followed by teammates in second, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth.
“Penns Valley is just so very good,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Julie Roseborough. “W realistically didn’t think we had much of a chance. Our kids ran really good times, some of them the best so far this year. Penns Valley just has an outstanding cross country team.”
Lady Blue Devil senior Allison Cherry passed her Penns Valley foe at the end of the girls race to claim first place by just one second in a time of 21:29.
Penns Valley runners finished second, third, fourth and fifth, before freshman Sarah Bell broke through to finish sixth in 23:59. Junior Jenna Ralston was ninth in 25:20 and ninth grader Cathy Mock was 10th in 25:39.
“Allison ran a super race,” said Roseborough. “ She passed the Penns Valley girl about three yards from the end of the race to win by one second. The girls ran goo times, the other team was just better.”
The B-A cross country squad will run in Saturday’s Lion at Altoona at 9 a.m.
