Bellwood-Antis scored early and often against Williamsburg as the Blue Devils celebrated Homecoming by thrashing cross-county foe Williamsburg 51-7 on Friday night at Bellwood Memorial Stadium.
B-A Homecoming Queen Meghan McCloskey was crowned at halftime by 2001 Homecoming Queen Annie Young. Stevis Krater was named the First Runner-up and Amy Parson was The Second Runner-up.
By that time, the Blue Devil football team had piled up five touchdowns to honor Meghan’s selection as Homecoming Queen.
“This was a tough game to play,” explained Bellwood-Antis coach John Hayes. “You try to manage the game, and manipulate the people in and out instead of just going out and playing. We wanted our kids to look good and do the things that we practiced, the things we are putting in. You get way out ahead and you start to manage, to get everybody in and not to try to make the other team look bad. You want to look good when the game is over , but it’s hard to put all those things together and have it come out that way.”
B-A scored on their first three pssessions to take a 22-0 lead after just one quarter, then score twice in the second quarter and once each in the third and fourth.
Williamsburg scored theirt sole TD against the Jayvees with just 0:24 left to play in the game.
Adam Plummer rambled 21 yards on the third play of the game and Jesse Graham lofted a 25 yard pass into the endzone where Damion Miller made a good catch for the initial score. On the PAT try, while lined up for Dan Graham to kick, Bellwood-Antis hiked the ball to Matt Sneath who ran it in for two points.
Plummer kick-started the second drive with a 22-yard jaunt and Derrick Miller bulled one yard for the score after Ryan McCartney blocked a Williamsburg punt and Bret McCartney (no relation) recovered at the Blue Pirate-23. This time, Dan Graham did boot the PAT to give the Blue Devils a 15-0 advantage.
Later in the same period Bellwood-Antis, which forced Williamsburg to punt even times in the game and picked off two pass interceptions, got the first of two picks by Dan Houser at their own 49. Adam Plummer, who rushed seven times for 104 yards to lead a Blue Devil attack that accumulated 303 yards rushing, dashed 17 yards on the opening cal and then a dozen more, before Derrick Miller scooted 22 yards for the quick score. Dan Graham’s PAT kick raised the B-A lead to 22-0.
In the second quarter, The Blue Devils got another short TD drive. Cory Daly got six yards on the first play, then a Jesse Graham to Padraig Flynn pass play netted 10 more. Plummer found a big hole for 12 yards and Daly, who added 102 yards on just six carries, slipped through the line and scooted 22 yards for the TD.
Williamsburg marched 41 yards in 10 plays for their most sustained drive of the night, but Dan Houser ended it there, stepping in front of a Wiliamsburg pass, his fifth pick of the season to lead all area defensive players and returned it 44 yards to set up the final score of the first half.
Jesse Graham completed a pair of short passes to keep the sticks moving for important first downs, going to Cory Daly for seven and Ryan McCartney for 14. Adam Plummer covered the final 15 yards for the TD and Dan Graham added the PAT kick.
The Blue Devils took just one play to score on their first possession oif the third quarter. Cory Daly went through a big hole opened up by his teammates on the line over the left side and then simply outraced everybody for the 70-yard score. Dan Graham’s fifth extra point of the game gave B-A a 43-0 edge midway through the third quarter.
From this point on, the reserves played on offense for the rest of the game and most of the defensive starters were gone a couple of series later.
Ricky Shanno capped the Blue Devils’ scoring taking it up the middle, cutting left and racing 43 yards for the touchdown. A bad snap from center on the PAT attempt sailed over Dan Graham’s head. Dan went back and picked it up and fired the pigskin downfield wher junior end John McFalls grabbed it and just made it into the endzone for two more points and a 51-0 lead.
“The defense played a super game for us tonight,” said Hayes. “They gave us great field positionearly on. Special teams especially on punts did a good job and we have some big-play people who when given the opportunity knowe how to make great plays. Adam Plummer had a couple of runs where he just wouldn’t go down. The kids gave a good effort and that’s the thing that concerned me most. They read the newspapres, they knew they were heavily favored. The know how they match up against the people they are going against. I have to credit our kids for getting themselves ready to play. We could have won and they could have looked bad and it would have been a step back. Williamsburg deserves creidt as well. They are very scrappy, they played hard the whole game. Scoring there at the end, maybe they can go home and have something good to feel about.”
