You can find many smiling Lady Eagles in Tyrone today after the Tyrone softball squad took out Philipsburg-Osceola on their home field at the Philipsburg Curtis Park Athletic Complex, 5-1 Tuesday.
The much-needed victory for the Eagles was beautifully executed and improved the girls‚ record to 1-2. A very strong showing was made by senior pitcher, Hilary McNelis with a great pitching and show-stopping offensive game.
Eagle senior Hilary McNelis set the pace for the game early, coming up second to bat in the first inning and driving a home run to left field, bringing Katie Whitby home with her to score two runs and start the game off right.
Things remained quiet for the Lady Eagles in the next two innings, heating up again in the fourth when Stephanie Bryan was walked home to score the third run of the game.
With a run by McNelis in the fifth, the Eagles remained confident but alert. Early in the fifth, an electrifying double play by McNelis, first baseman Heather Stanton and catcher Kim Cherry took out two Mounties in one motion, ending the inning and setting the score at 4-0.
Philipsburg put on steam at the beginning of the seventh, but it just wasn’t enough as a final run by McNelis put them away for a final score of 5-1.
McNelis and Cherry both finished with two RBI for the Lady Eagles.
Tyrone head coach Lois Loncher commented, “[It was] a great team effort, great pitching, timely hitting and great defense. We showed what we were capable of today. We went out, earned it and basically outplayed them for seven innings.”
The Lady Eagle’s meeting with Lewistown was moved up to Wednesday, April 6 at the Harry Sickler Athletic Complex at 4:30 p.m., due to weather concerns for the game that had been originally scheduled for Thursday.
