Bellwood-Antis proved to be too good a host in a Monday afternoon baseball game Bellwood pitchers walked six batters and five of them scored in a 16-6 Mount Union victory over the Blue Devils that was stopped by the mercy rule after five innings.
Mount Union jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage in the top of the first, then batted around in both the second and third innings to score seven and four runs respectively for all intents putting the game away early.
After the Blue Devils went 1-2-3 in the first inning, cleanup hitter Fred Dorman powered a home run to right center to get Bellwood-Antis on the scoreboard. L. J. Seidel and Tyler McClellan followed two outs later with singles, but were stranded, when Trojan junior left-hander struck out Adam DeArmitt to end the threat.
With Mount Union up 10-1 and threatening to get more Andy Brisbin ended the game as the fourth B-A hurler of the suddenly very long afternoon. Three more runs scored, but Brisbin settled the Trojans down through the rest of the third and the fourth, before Mount Union finally got to Brisbin for three more scores in the fifth.
Bellwood-Antis narrowed the score to 13-6 with a Josh Kleinfelter solo dinger in the third and three runs in the fourth.
Kleinfelter got a second life when the Trojan first baseman dropped his foul ball down the first base line. Kleinfelter drilled a shot just to the right of dead center for his first varsity hit.
Brandon Beech opened the fourth inning with a single. Seidel singled to center and both runners moved up on an error by the centerfielder. Tyler McClellan blasted a laser shot to right that the right fielder never saw, legging out a triple that scored Beech and Seidel. Adam DeArmitt walked and Kleinfelter scored McClellan with a sacrifice fly.
Kyle Drost started the game on the mound for the Blue Devils, going an inning and a third, walking three and giving up three hits and five runs. Ernie Kelley finished up the second inning allowing four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Brandon Beech, the third pitcher, gave up four runs on two hits and two walks. Brisbin tossed the final two and 2/3 innings fanning two and walking one, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Martinez went the distance for Mount Union, giving up six runs, five earned on 10 hits, striking out five and walking a pair.
Designated hitter Bubba Brown had four hits, four runs scored and three RBI in five trips to the plate for Mount Union. Matt Baird had three hits and Ryan Pollicino, Seth McVey, Matt McMaster and Jordy Yocum each had two hits. Pollicino had a home run and Martinez, Brown, McVey, Yocum and Baird hit doubles.
