The Tyrone cross country teams hosted Hollidaysburg, Lewistown and Juniata Valley on Tuesday. Juniata Valley was represented by two runners von the boys side, but did not figure in the scoring because of the limited number, in a sport where the top five finishers from each school earn team points with the lowest score a winner.
The Tyrone girls dropped close matches to Juniata Valley 29-26 and Lewistown 29-26 and got blown out by a very strong Hollidaysburg squad 44-16.
Rebecca Mogle was the Lady Eagles top runner finishing the home course in 25:04, good for seventh place overall, followed by Emily Ingle who cracked the top 10 in tenth place with a time of 26:09. Angel Diehl was 14th, Erin Langenbacher, 19th and Adeena Harbst 27th.
Katie Wecko of Juniata Valley motored around the course in 21:20 to win top honors, nearly a full minute in front of second place finisher Megan Duffet of Hollidaysburg, who finished in 22:05. Both girls were considerably ahead of the rest of the field. Laurel Fagan of Lewistown was third in 23:24, followed by six more girls who finished in the next two minutes time.
“Now that our girls are getting over injuries,” said Tyrone coach Tammy Snyder, “and we are able to put everything we have back into practices, we should start seeing results. Rebecca Mogle is becoming stronger as she is healing. I think today she only started to show what she can do. Emily Ingle is running very well and had a nice race.”
Jim Gehret’s ninth place finish topped the Tyrone boys with a 20:02 followed by Nick Barndt (19th), Dane McCloskey (20th) Eric Sweet (23rd) and Brian Pearson (25th). Other Tyrone runners included Sam McCloskey (26th) and John Wiser (28th).
Nate Sylvester of Hollidaysburg had the best time with 18:22 followed by a pair of Lewistown runners John Foltz (19:03) and Vince Arzmenol (19:12). The Golden Tigers got the next four finishers to outduel Lewistown 23-38 in the other match.
“I think our boys all ran well today,” said coach Snyder. “We need to really work on filling the gap between our first and second runners, which I think we can do by the end of the season.”
